The theme of the Båstad chamber music festival 2017 ”Ursprung” (Roots) focuses on reflections, but also looks forward to new times and new thinking, something that has always been an important component in the festival. We often find strong influences from traditional folk music in classical music. Many composers relate to their own or other countries' folk music traditions and therefore contribute to creating something new from something old. The theme also includes the message "Music – the global language” expressing the understanding of and interest in other cultures and therefore respect for all mankind, an important message for a 25th Anniversary. The composer in residence, Helena Tulve, is one of Estonia’s most successful young composers with great international achievements. Her musical style fits very well to the festival theme. Her music can be described as organic; with a focus on flow and great sound visions, more than rhythmical structures. Her music grows out of simple, pristine impulses with native patterns, influenced by Gregorian chant, oriental culture, French spectral music and experimental music.
